constantly seeking to improve our operations and services. Performance Measurement is one of the tools we use to do this. Fairfax County's performance measures are integrated into our annual budget to ensure accountability and establish the link between resources and results.

Beginning in 2003, agencies have begun submitting quarterly performance information which will be distributed in the quarterly Performance Report. This will enable tracking of the agencies' progress in meeting their performance measures as established in the 2003 budget. Institutionalization of these quarterly reports are an integral component of increasing accountability and enhancing efficiency.

King County has been working for many years on developing a strong performance management system. In 2008, the county took a major step forward in placing into county code a countywide performance management framework that applies to all branches of county government. With the adoption of the Performance and Accountability Ordinance (Ordinance 16202) and the related transparency motion (Motion 12791), the Metropolitan King County Council established for the first time a countywide performance management expectation.

Hamilton City Council has developed a very important document that defines the mission of our local government and a vision for the future of Hamilton. A core set of values also exists to guide behaviour and actions concerning the management of the city.

In the fall of 2000 the provincial Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced the Municipal Performance Measurement Program, which required all municipalities in Ontario to file financial and performance data with the province. Municipalities are also required to publish the results for the taxpayers of the municipality, and one of the publication options is posting the information to the Internet.

Performance management (the processes we use to improve services) has increased significantly at the city council as service improvement has become a major priority for us.
